The same system behaves very differently in a new build and in a house that is already standing, so we look at the floor, the insulation and the heat source before recommending a design.
New build or retrofit
In a new build the floor build-up, insulation, screed and pipe spacing are planned on paper before the slab is poured, so the system can be sized for each room. In an existing home, three things decide the job:
- Floor height: a screed system adds depth, so door bottoms, thresholds and stairs must be checked. Low-profile systems add much less.
- Insulation under the existing floor: heating pipes over an uninsulated slab lose heat downwards.
- The heat source and the rest of the house: old windows and poor insulation are often the cheaper thing to fix first.
Controls decide the comfort
Most complaints about underfloor heating are control problems. A screed floor holds heat, so it should be run steadily with room-by-room zoning and a suitable control strategy rather than switched on and off like a radiator. We discuss zones, manifold position and thermostats at quote stage.

Yes. Tile and stone conduct heat well, thick carpet and underlay insulate against it, and engineered wood must be suitable for use over heating. Choose the finish together with the heating design.
